Op San Diego Comic-Con vond vorig weekend de uitreiking van de prestigieuze Eisner Awards plaats, het jaarlijkse moment waarop de Engelstalige stripindustrie zichzelf schouderklopjes geeft.
San Diego Comic-Con is niet alleen de jaarlijkse hoogmis voor geeks, het is ook de plek waar de Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards worden uitgedeeld. Zo’n Eisner Award in ontvangst nemen, is een hele eer voor wie werkt in de Engelstalige stripindustrie. Dit jaar waren de twee grote winnaars Monstress en My Favorite Thing Is Monsters en hun makers.
Beste series en graphic novels
Monstress nam onder andere de prijs in ontvangst voor Beste lopende serie en Beste publicatie voor tieners. De fantasyreeks, geïnspireerd door Azië in de jaren 1900, over een meisje met een psychische link met een monster, wordt al bejubeld sinds de release ervan in november 2015.
My Favorite Thing Is Monsters is een graphic novel over een jonge vrouw die de dood van haar buur onderzoekt, gesitueerd in Chicago in de jaren 60. Het boek, tevens het debuut van Emil Ferris, won de prijs voor Beste nieuwe graphic novel.
Ook enkele superheldencomics vielen in de prijzen. Black Bolt (Saladin Ahmed en Christian Ward) won de Eisner Award voor Beste nieuwe serie, terwijl Black Panther: World of Wakanda (Roxane Gay, Ta-Nehisi Coates en Alitha E. Martinez) de prijs voor Beste korte serie opstreek.
Katie O’Neill ging voor haar The Tea Dragon Society zowel naar huis met het beeldje voor Beste webcomic en Beste publicatie voor kinderen. Spinning, een coming-of-age-verhaal, won Beste werk gebaseerd op realiteit. Beide strips zijn ontzettend belangrijk voor de representatie van kinderen en tieners die zich anders identificeren dan hetero.
Beste schrijvers en tekenaars
Emil Ferris won voor haar debuut My Favorite Thing is Monsters de prijs voor Beste schrijver/artiest en voor Beste inkleuring. Ook de makers zelf van Monstress vielen in de prijzen: tekenares Sana Takeda mocht naar huis met de prijzen voor Beste schilder/multimedia-artiest en voor Beste covertekenaar.
Monstress-scenariste Marjorie Liu deelde dan weer het beeldje voor Beste schrijver (de eerste keer voor een vrouw) met Tom King, de scenarist van Mister Miracle en de huidige Batman-reeks. Mitch Gerards mocht dankzij zijn tekenwerk in Mister Miracle de prijs voor Beste tekenaar in ontvangst nemen. Ook leuk: Hamish Steele won een award voor Beste nieuwkomer. Het is een jolige tekenaar die ik al een tijdje volg en nu aan het doorbreken is. Zijn stripboek DeadEndia overtuigde me helemaal van zijn talent.
